Deleting Calendars

Deleting a calendar permanently removes it and every event it contains. Before you proceed, make sure you understand what happens and consider whether a lighter alternative — like hiding the calendar — would serve you better.

How to Delete a Calendar

  1. In the left sidebar, hover over the calendar you want to delete.
  2. Click the three-dot menu (⋮) next to the calendar name.
  3. Select Delete calendar.
  4. A confirmation dialog appears. Read the warning, then click Delete to confirm.

The calendar and all its events are removed immediately.

warning

Deleting a calendar is permanent. All events in the calendar are deleted along with it. There is no trash, no undo, and no recovery option. Once you confirm the deletion, the data is gone.

What Gets Deleted

When you delete a calendar, PrimeCal removes:

  • The calendar itself (name, color, description, settings)
  • Every event stored in that calendar, including all occurrences of recurring events
  • Any shared access settings for that calendar

What is not deleted: events that belong to other calendars, or events that you created on someone else's calendar.

Who Can Delete a Calendar

Only the calendar owner can delete a calendar. If you share a calendar with other users and they have write or even admin access, they cannot delete it — only the person who originally created it can.

Shared members who want the calendar gone should ask the owner to delete it.

Before You Delete: Consider the Alternatives

Just hide it instead

If the reason you want to delete is that the calendar is cluttering your view, hiding it is a better option. Click the colored dot next to its name in the sidebar to toggle it off. The calendar and its events are invisible but safe — you can restore them any time.

Archive events first

If the calendar holds historical events you might want to reference later (last year's project schedule, a completed sports season), consider exporting the events first. Use the Export option in the calendar settings to download an iCalendar (.ics) file. You can import this file into another calendar app or back into PrimeCal at a later date.

Move events to another calendar

If only some events in the calendar are worth keeping, open each one and change its assigned calendar to a calendar you're keeping. Once the events worth saving have been moved, delete the now-empty calendar.

Example: End of the School Year

May created a "Sue — School" calendar for the school year. The year is over and she doesn't need it anymore. Before deleting, she:

  1. Checks whether any events in it should be preserved (answer: no — they're all in the past).
  2. Considers whether she might want the same calendar structure next year (answer: yes, she'll just create a new one in September).
  3. Confirms she hasn't stored anything important in the event notes.

She's satisfied, so she opens the three-dot menu, selects Delete calendar, and confirms. The calendar is gone.

Next September, she'll create a fresh "Sue — School" calendar and start over.

Example: Consolidating Calendars

Will created both a "Will — Work" and a "Will — Meetings" calendar but found the split wasn't useful — everything ended up on Work anyway, and Meetings was nearly empty. He moves the few events from Meetings to Work by editing each one and changing its calendar, then deletes the empty "Will — Meetings" calendar.

Now his sidebar is cleaner, and he's back under the 5-calendar Free plan limit.

tip

If you're approaching the 5-calendar limit on the Free plan and thinking about deleting old calendars to make room, consider hiding them instead. A hidden calendar takes the same "slot" in your 5-calendar count, but it preserves your history. Upgrading your plan is a better long-term solution if you consistently need more than 5 active calendars.
