Calendar Settings
After you create a calendar, you can adjust its name, color, and description at any time. These settings are reached through the calendar's three-dot menu in the sidebar.
Opening Calendar Settings
- In the left sidebar, find the calendar you want to edit.
- Hover over the calendar name to reveal the three-dot menu (⋮) on the right side.
- Click the three-dot menu and select Edit calendar.
- The calendar settings dialog opens.
What You Can Edit
Name
Rename the calendar to anything you like. Changes take effect immediately and show across all views and in any shared views other users have of this calendar.
If you shared a calendar with someone and rename it, they will see the new name in their sidebar (if you are the owner and they are a collaborator).
Good naming practice: Use names that include the person's name or purpose — "May Personal", "Late Family", "Will — Work" — rather than generic terms like "Personal" or "Events".
Color
Click any of the 16 color swatches to choose a new color. The preview updates instantly. When you save, all events on this calendar update to the new color in every view.
See Calendar Colors and Visibility for guidance on choosing colors that work well together.
Description
The description field is optional text that explains what the calendar is for. It's especially useful for shared calendars, where collaborators may not know the purpose at a glance.
Example descriptions:
- "Shared family calendar — add events here that affect the whole household."
- "Will's work schedule — read-only for family members."
- "School timetable and school-related deadlines for Sue."
Descriptions are visible to anyone with access to the calendar.
What You Cannot Change
| Field | Why it can't be changed |
|---|---|
| Calendar ID | Internal identifier used by the system; changing it would break synced data |
| Owner | Ownership cannot be transferred. To give someone else full control, share the calendar with admin permission and delete your own copy |
| Creation date | Historical record; cannot be modified |
Who Can Edit a Calendar
Only the calendar owner or a collaborator with admin permission can edit calendar settings. If you can see a calendar in your sidebar but the Edit option is greyed out or missing from the three-dot menu, you have read or write access — not admin access.
To request edit access, ask the calendar owner to upgrade your permission level.
Example: Renaming and Recoloring
When the Blate family first set up PrimeCal, May created a calendar called "Family" in green. After a few weeks she decided to be more specific — she renamed it to "Late Family" to distinguish it from a separate "Extended Family" calendar for grandparents' visits, and recolored the Extended Family calendar to Lime so the two greens don't get confused.
- Hover over "Family" in the sidebar → click ⋮ → Edit calendar
- Change name: "Family" → "Late Family"
- Color stays Green — no change needed
- Click Save
Then for the new Extended Family calendar:
- Create the calendar with the name "Extended Family"
- Pick Lime (a lighter green, distinct from the emerald green of Late Family)
- Add a description: "Events involving grandparents, aunts, uncles — add here when relevant."
If you share a calendar with people outside your household, always fill in the description field. A one-sentence explanation of the calendar's purpose saves a lot of confusion for collaborators who weren't part of the original setup.
Editing calendar settings does not affect the events stored in that calendar. A rename or recolor is cosmetic — all events remain intact with the same dates, times, and details.
